The challenge

Taking back control of the platform.

The client had worked with a third party to develop a custom solution that let their end-users manage account planning activities and forecasting for the calendar year. Now they wanted to build the Account Planning System from the ground up — essentially taking control of the source code and the future direction of the platform.

As UX Lead, I started with a discovery phase to establish the overall experience and an initial project backlog, the foundation the team would build from.

Discover

Start with the people and the system they already use.

Discovery ran four weeks. It began with project initiation, goal definition, and a kick-off, so everyone started from the same picture of what the new platform needed to do.

From there I identified the product's user personas and roles, interviewed stakeholders and subject-matter experts to gather high-level requirements, and ran a heuristic evaluation of the current system.

Define

Map the work, then shape the backlog.

With the landscape understood, I built user journey maps and user flows for the planning work, then ran ideation sessions to explore how the new platform could support it.

All of it fed the initial backlog, which I documented, reviewed, and refined so the team had a clear, prioritized view of what to build.

Design

Wireframes first, with stories a step ahead of development.

Initial concept wireframes became the Sprint 0 deliverables, giving the team a concrete starting point before implementation began.

As discovery wrapped up, I kept building out detailed user stories for the first two sprints, getting ahead of development so the team had stories ready when it started.

Deliver

Eight weeks to launch, and a platform that kept improving.

Implementation took an additional eight weeks, built from the backlog and user stories established in discovery.

After deployment, the platform kept evolving, and I led the design effort for the enhancements that followed. They included quickly bulk-updating account plans' net revenue values across the current client list, guardrail management, changes to forecast adjusted revenue, Pricing Scenarios, and a Client P&L Report.

Once end users had spent time with the product in the real world, I also led a round of overall user experience improvements.
